Aston Villa bring City’s perfect start to an end
The biggest result of the weekend came at Villa Park, where Aston Villa defeated Manchester City 2-1 to end the leaders’ 100 per cent start to the Premier League season.
Nicolas Jackson proved decisive, scoring twice for Unai Emery’s side, while Erling Haaland replied for City with his seventh consecutive Premier League scoring appearance.
Villa’s victory continued their remarkable recent home record against City, marking a fourth successive league win over them at Villa Park.
City still carried a threat, but this time their attacking quality could not compensate for mistakes at the other end.
For the first time this season, the leaders looked vulnerable enough for their rivals to take advantage.
And Arsenal did not need a second invitation.

Arsenal punish City’s slip
Mikel Arteta’s side produced the sort of controlled performance that became familiar during last season’s title-winning campaign, beating Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Ezri Konsa opened the scoring from Martin Ødegaard’s corner, registering his first goal for Arsenal, before Gabriel Magalhães added the second on his 200th appearance for the club.
It was not Arsenal at their most spectacular, but it was Arsenal at their most efficient.
A clean sheet, a set-piece goal and three points were enough to bring the champions level with Manchester City on points, with City retaining top spot only on goal difference following Saturday’s matches.
At this stage of the season, that may be more important than producing an exhibition every week.
Arsenal have again shown that when a rival leaves the door open, they are ready to walk through it.

Tottenham make a statement at Stamford Bridge
Tottenham’s recovery under Roberto De Zerbi gathered further momentum with an impressive 2-0 victory over Chelsea.
Winning at Stamford Bridge has traditionally been one of Tottenham’s most difficult assignments. Before this weekend, Spurs had managed only one league victory there since the Premier League began.
That history made this result all the more significant.
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders inadvertently punched a corner into his own net in the 77th minute before Cole Palmer was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card.
Mathys Tel then completed the victory with a late individual goal.
It was Tottenham’s second league victory at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League era and another encouraging sign for a team beginning to rediscover confidence.
For Chelsea, it was a reminder that Xabi Alonso’s project remains a work in progress.
